I opened my eyes to being violently shaken. "Wake up, Caleb. Wake up right now!"
Such a rough way to be awoken. "I'm awake," I moaned feeling heavy and cold. Cold. Just like the previous night.
My eyes snapped open to Ballard's worried face. "You're back," he said with relief.
I saw it was still night and wondered, "Was it the same as..."
"Yes. You were dead. But now I know why," he said and gave me some water. He then pointed near the wall of the shack, where the alabaster bird lay. "It was that accursed thing."
"What do you mean?"
"It tried to get out," Ballard said.
"Do you mean that it came to life?" I asked, not completely surprised.
"Yes. At your expense. You fell dead. In the same instant, it came to life and tried to fly away, but it couldn't pass through my barrier. It stole your life!" Ballard said his eyes burning with fury.
"So why am I alive again?" I wondered.
"Because I trapped it here," Ballard said. "I should smash it to pieces." He went to stand over it like he would stomp on it.
I rushed to him and grabbed his arm to pull him away. "No!"
Ballard shook me off. "It tried to steal your life!"
"That was the bargain I made," I told him and grabbed his arm again. "And why couldn't the bird escape. Its power is immense."
"Do you doubt my power to keep it here?" Ballard asked.
"Yes."
Ballard grew thoughtful then looked down at the motionless alabaster bird. "As a living bird, it had no power except to fly."
"It didn't fly away from the cave," I reminded him.
"It can't. It takes your life for the night. Though it lives, it can't remain a living bird. In the morning, it returns to become an alabaster bird once more."
"So it doesn't wish to steal my life, only to borrow it," I said, but Ballard was furious again.
"It cannot be allowed to do it again," he said sternly.
"I made the bargain in good faith," I told Ballard then admitted what I didn't want him to know. "The bargain was for your life."
"Mine only?" he asked and I avoided his gray, knowing eyes.
"The bird was repaying the debt to me for freeing it. It only saved you because I agreed to exchange life for life," I told him. "If I don't hold to the bargain, it will be your life it takes."
"You damned fool," Ballard said to me angrily, as grateful as ever.
